Mission of the organisation

To conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

Key Activites

  • Coordinating the network activities of nearly 500 local Chapters, nearly half a million members, state offices, and nature centers across the nation as a leading U.S. voice for bird and habitat conservation and in mobilizing individuals to take conservation action.
  • Identifying, prioritizing and conserving vital bird habitat in the United States, while working with other BirdLife partners to safeguard Important Bird Areas across the Western Hemisphere. 
  • Engaging a network of Audubon activists to promote sound environmental policy at national, state and local levels.
  • Inspiring millions people each year, of all ages and backgrounds, to connect with nature and conservation action through Audubon nature centers, sanctuaries, acclaimed Audubon Magazine and education programs.
  • Leading tens of thousands of citizen scientists in monitoring, assessing and protecting bird populations through the century-old Christmas Bird Count, home-based Great Backyard Bird Count, and the digital initiative Hummingbirds at Home.
  • Bringing conservation to homes, backyards, communities, and public places through Audubon At Home by enabling Bird Friendly Communities  across the country.
  • Working to save important bird areas, including the Arctic Slope, the Everglades, the Mississippi River Delta, Western Rivers, Western Sage habitat and the Long Island Sound.
  • Providing long-term restoration and recovery efforts to address the damage caused by the explosion of BP’s Deep Water Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, hurricanes and damaging storms, and other environmental crises 
  • Working to shape a healthy climate and clean energy future by improving energy siting to minimize impacts on birds and people, supporting climate policy solutions, and more.
  • Engaging new audiences in taking action to shape a healthier environment through Audubon’s Toyota TogetherGreen conservation leadership program (more information at
